Potential extension of WESGRO SLA

The service level agreement (SLA) between Knysna Municipality and Wesgro expires on 23 October this year. Council had resolved on 31 March 2021 that this SLA is not to be renewed. The Finance & Corporate Services Committee has confirmed that it will recommend that Council extend the SLA until 31 December this year.

“We were approached by the Greater Knysna Business Chamber and other tourism industry stakeholders who advocated that Council reconsider its previous resolution,” said acting Municipal Manager Phumla Makoma. “There is strong motivation behind this request, based on a number of factors.”

The tourism industry, which is a vital component of the local economy, suffered severe setbacks due to the restrictions imposed under the COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020. The situation remains unpredictable as the country is put under various levels of national lockdown affecting the accommodation, food & beverage, activity, entertainment and other members of the industry. “Concerns regarding the internal coordination of this function were also addressed as no permanent appointment has yet been made to the post of Manager: Economic Development,” Makoma continued.

“We live in exceptional times and, if there is something I think we have all learned, it is that we must be able to adapt if we hope to make economic headway,” she concluded. “We thank our tourism industry stakeholders for their input and their support – and we understand the trying circumstances under which they are operating. Know that we are committed to working with you to manage and promote the destination that is the greater Knysna area.”
