Excitement builds as planning for the 2024 Knysna Oyster Festival gains momentum

The 2024 Knysna Oyster Festival is taking place from 21 to 30 June 2024. Celebrating 41 years of success, this year will be no different and Municipal Manager, Mr Ombali Sebola, said that planning is well underway.

“Visit Knysna is working with key stakeholders including the Greater Knysna Business Chamber, Transport Operators, DCAS and event organisers to ensure a full and entertaining programme. Entries for the two anchor events on the weekends, the Knysna Cycle Tour, and the 39th Knysna Forest Marathon have opened, and are doing well.”

He said they had various meetings with stakeholders and the Steering Committee. “Over 75 events have already been submitted for this year’s Festival. The deadline for event submission to be included in the official printed programme is the 15th of April. After the 15th events can still be added to the programme but will only be included in the online programme on the official Festival website. Proposed plans include a Festival hub at the High School Sports field in town. We hope to have a full programme at this venue which will include the registration and finish for both the Knysna Forest Marathon and the Knysna Cycle Race.

Qualifying local SMME’s with products that are unique to Knysna can apply to display or sell their products at the Festival Hub. The application deadline is 18th April 2024 and application forms can be obtained at the Visit Knysna offices in Main Road.

Other events include the Eden Classic Car Show, Simola Sunset Wine Run, Golf Tournaments, the Knysna Wine Festival, Soccer, Rugby, and Chess Tournaments.

Sebola said they aim to offer a variety of events with entertainment for a wide range of audiences. “Arts & Culture events to look forward to are, amongst others, the Kasi Music Festival, the Knysna Art Walkabout, a Potjiekos Competition and live entertainment at restaurants.”

“The Oyster Hotspots will also be back this year, and Festival organisers are liaising with the Knysna Sea Cadets to try and bring the SA Navy back to Knysna during the Festival. We have also contacted SAPS asking them to get involved in community events.”

Sebola said it is important that everyone works together to make the annual Knysna Oyster Festival a highlight on the Garden Route events calendar. “We are talking to sponsors and their financial contribution will ensure that the Festival continues to contribute and build our local economy. We want to thank the event organisers and everyone working hard to make this year’s event a success – we are looking forward to a successful 2024 Knysna Oyster Festival!
