The Speaker, Georlene Wolmarans is the Convener of Council Meetings. She is a Proportional Representative (PR) councillor for the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Resident in Knysna since 1992, Ms Georlene Wolmarans has been involved in community activities for most of her life, and has acted in numerous leadership roles across different political and government spheres.
Originally from Riverdal, Ms Wolmarans entered politics in 2004 when she joined the Independent Democrats (ID) and played a vital role in the establishment of a local ID branch in Knysna. She has served on the Knysna Municipal Council since 2006 when she became a PR councillor for the ID.
Ms Wolmarans was elected the ID Western Cape Deputy Leader in 2007 and later became the Leader of the Independent Democrats in the province. She has also served at Deputy Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in the Western Cape.
In 2009 she successfully completed the Executive Leadership Development Programme for Municipal Councillors at the University of the Western Cape.
She joined the DA in September 2010 and was almost immediately co-opted as a member of the party’s East Region Management team, also serving on the Provincial Executive Committee.
In addition to her political career, she has also served on the School Governing Body of Sunridge Primary School in Knysna from 2004 to 2010, and has been on the Boards of the Knysna Provincial Hospital and the Vermont Old Age Home since 2010.
Married to husband Daniel, she is also mother of three daughters.
