The Census 2011 survey marks the third Census conducted by Statistics South Africa since 1994. The survey provides for the most comprehensive set of information on household and population statistics as it can be downloaded at national, provincial, district, municipal, lower place and ward level.
The main focus of the 2011 census was to take stock and produce a total count of the population without omission or duplication. Another major focus of Statistics South Africa was to be able to provide accurate demographic and socio-economic characteristics pertaining to each individual enumerated. Apart from individuals, the focus was also on collecting accurate data on housing characteristics and services.
The data gathered is considered useful by all spheres of government as it assists them with their planning and evaluation processes at the smallest geographical area possible. The statistics are internationally comparable and relevant to the majority of stakeholder’s needs.
